ABOUT THE SOCIETY:

The Whitstable Choral Society promotes at least four concerts a year in a number of local venues which always includes a concert with traditional music and carols in St. Alphege Church, Whitstable in December. The Society performs a wide variety of choral music which, in recent years, has included Carl Orff's "Carmina Burana", Dvorak "Stabat Mater", and Requiems by Brahms and Mozart. The Society's musical director is David Flood who is Organist and Master of Choristers at Canterbury Cathedral.

SOCIETY OBJECTIVES:

To promote, improve, develop and mantain public education in, and appreciation of, the art and science of Choral Music, in all its aspects, by the presentation of public concerts and recitals.

BACKGROUND OF THE SOCIETY:

The Society's links with choral music go back a great many years. The original choir was formed in 1868. However it was between the World Wars that the Choral Society played a significant part in the town's activities managing to attract some celebrated singers of the time like Isobel Baillie.

After the Second World War the small choir, with their enthusiam for choral music, went from strength to strength under a variety of different musical directors.

Past Presidents of the Society, with the help of committees and Musical Directors have worked to increase the membership, widen the repertoire of the choir and provide a firm financial base for the Society.
